Editorial Policy

This policy explains how articles on Homeowner.wiki are researched, sourced, updated and corrected. Every article is published under the Homeowner.wiki Editorial Team byline.

What we cover

Homeowner.wiki is an independent guide for US homeowners. We cover what repairs and services cost, how home warranties and insurance claims work, financing and mortgage options, energy and utility savings, property tax and HOA rules, and buying, selling and moving.

How articles are researched

  • Costs are published as ranges and labeled as national averages. Where we cite a figure, we name the survey, agency or trade group it came from.
  • Legal, insurance and finance topics are checked against primary sources: regulator guidance (FTC, CFPB, HUD, state insurance departments), IRS publications and published policy or contract language. Rules differ by state and provider, and articles say so.
  • Energy and efficiency guidance follows the US Department of Energy, EPA and ENERGY STAR.
  • Our editorial process uses software tools, including AI-assisted drafting, and every guide is reviewed against the sources listed at the end of it before it is published.

Sources

Guides list their sources in a Sources section. We prefer government agencies, standards bodies and primary documents over other websites. Calculators on the site show their formula and assumptions, and the results are estimates, not quotes.

Independence and advertising

The site is supported by advertising and, in some articles, by referral links to service providers. Those relationships do not decide what we write or which options we list first. We do not accept payment to rank or recommend a company.

Updates

Articles carry a publish date. We revisit cost, legal and finance guides when the underlying prices, programs or rules change, and update the article in place.

Corrections

If you find an error or an out-of-date figure, send it through the contact page with the article link. We check it against the source and correct the article.

Not professional advice

Articles are general information, not legal, financial, tax or insurance advice. For decisions involving significant money or liability, consult a licensed professional in your state.
